What's a blog?

This entry will be used to establish what we understand by blog. However, a semantical definition will not be given, instead I’m going to talk about why it is so interesting to use them correctly and what aims are pursued when creating a blog.

Having a blog gives you the chance to create a place where express your thoughts or teachings, a place where reporting any new you could find interesting and so on.
Talking about education, a blog could be our best ally: It enables us to join a theoretical teaching with more dynamic technologic resources that are more difficult to give in a traditional classroom. Let’s imagine that we are teaching a particular story event, we could use our blog to create an entry where going adding pictures, videos or anything related with that event. Another key point about using blogs, is that our students have the possibility of providing feedback through the use of the commentary box.
For that reason, a blog should provide the information well-structured and accessible for whoever interested on it. All the information provided needs to be organized in order to ensure that any visitor won’t have any trouble finding a particular entry. So, making a good homepage is something we need to work on as it will be the first approach to our blog. Hence, catching people attention will depend on that first impression.

According to Campbell (2003), we can think about different types of blogs in education, attending to who is its author. We can talk about the tutor, the class or the learner blog. However, it is important to take into account some policies when creating a blog. As an example, it is important to use an appropiate language, avoiding the use of common chat expressions. More examples can be seen on the references.
